Vaccinations are crucial for preventing infectious diseases that can be harmful or fatal to pets. They help build immunity against viruses, bacteria, and other pathogens.

The specific vaccines your pet requires depend on factors such as species, age, lifestyle, and geographic location. Common vaccines for dogs include those for rabies, distemper, parvovirus, and kennel cough. Cats often receive vaccines for rabies, feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and panleukopenia.

Vaccination schedules vary depending on the vaccine type, pet species, and local regulations. In general, initial vaccines are administered in a series of doses, followed by booster shots to maintain immunity. Your veterinarian can recommend a vaccination schedule tailored to your pet’s needs.

Even indoor pets can be at risk of exposure to infectious diseases. Some viruses, like rabies, can be transmitted through wildlife or even human contact. Additionally, certain diseases, such as feline leukemia, can spread among indoor cats. It’s essential to discuss your pet’s lifestyle and risk factors with your veterinarian to determine the necessary vaccines.

If your pet misses a scheduled booster shot, consult with your veterinarian as soon as possible. Depending on the vaccine type and duration since the last dose, your veterinarian may recommend resuming the vaccination series or administering a booster shot.
